Blood 블러드 episode 20 Final

The time has come to say our final farewell to a kdrama that has enjoyed international popularity. My site has received a lot of love and views that far exceeded my expectations. Thanks to all of you for supporting my first recapping effort. It made the hours of viewing and writing worth it, and I appreciated the  points of view expressed in the comments. So, let’s wrap this thing up.  Kochenia power, fighting! ♥


The realization that Hyun Woo is dead hits Ji Sang hard. Ri Ta is rightfully worried when Ji Sang asks her to watch over Hyun Woo. She can only imagine that he’ll get himself into a dangerous situation if he goes after Most Evil Director. But the look in his eyes tells her there is no stopping him.

Blood 블러드 episode 19

Ri Ta mourns Uncle’s death alone in the morgue. Aunt, the Director, and several others march down the hall, but Ji Sang stops them. Leave her alone, he tells Aunt. Ri Ta asks Uncle what should she do now that he is gone – he should have taken his secret to the grave. I so agree. Ji Sang enters and tells her it’s time to go. Is she supposed to forgive him she asks? He tells her she doesn’t have to. It’s too early for forgiveness. Once everything has been set right and there is nothing left to do, then forgiveness can come. He gives her permission to be angry and unforgiving, at least for now. Best advice, ever. Ri Ta curtly tells Aunt they will talk after Uncle is laid to rest. It is a sad scene as Ri Ta sits alone in the chapel. ( Ji Sang watches over her from the doorway.)

Blood 블러드 episode 18

Sorein – the special vampire identification spray – marks Ga Yeon as she begins to cough. Ji Sang asks if she has a cold but she replies it’s just a sudden coughing fit. Is he surprised, or is it a confirmation of his suspicions as he adds up past events?

Dr. Choi sighs that truth is such a heavy burden. She wonders how she can look at Dr. Park and Director the same way now that she knows they are infected.  If they bite…(she shivers). She reminds Dr. Jung about the promise to run through the hospital in his underwear if Dr. Park really is a vampire. What promise? It was just a joke between mentor and student, he retorts. When she insists, he teasingly stands to remove his belt, but she covers her eyes in a panic and tells him to stop – so dirty!

Blood 블러드 episode 17

Ji Sang races to the house after receiving an anonymous text that Hyun Woo is in danger. Three vampires have come to steal VTH-16 computer files and hurt Hyun Woo. In a vamp rage Ji Sang attacks two of them, but the third escapes with the flash drive. Hyun Woo goes to take his best shot with a stun gun, but it sticks. Yikes!  LUUVY flashes red sun* and distracts the intruder in time to allow Hyun Woo to take a shot – bull’s eye. He tosses a syringe to Ji Sang who successfully subdues the other one.

Ji Sang accuses the Director of having such greed that he threw away his friends and mentor. In a delusional rage the Director shouts, “That’s right! I ordered their murder. It was me!”

 

In a frenzy, he continues to spit his outrageous and twisted reasoning that they were cowards and wrong, and he was the one who wanted to save the world. Ji Sang angrily shouts that saving the world by killing people is insane. The ugly truth about the Director’s intentions and murderous actions are revealed.  The Director coldly says he has no guilty conscience and that he was justified and right. Furthermore, he heartlessly says he’ll never regret it and that it was for Ji Sang’s pitiful self.  At that preposterous admission, Ji Sang lunges for his throat; the Director retaliates. He tells Ji Sang to kill him if he wants to. Does he think that will end things?

The Passive-Aggressive War

Ji Sang becomes more aggressive now that he knows what buttons to push. Poor J is a pawn in this game and takes another beating. In order to challenge the Director, Ji Sang leaves him with a choice to kill J to show he was their mutual enemy or, if he lets him live, reveal that he and J are connected. Ji Sang tells him to send him a picture of the dead vampire as proof. The Director can’t contain his anger at J and orders Chul Hoon to kill him. What will be his fate? It is such a lose-lose situation for our vampire boys.

The Director has such gall. Lies and more lies. Like Hyun Woo said before, anyone who lies that much has something to hide. Ji Sang confronts the Director with the projected image of his parents, Jung Han Su, and the Director photographed together in the 1970s and demands to know what is going on. He asks about the two infected men who killed his parents and how they obtained the reconstituted blood to appear human like. Explain it all, he demands.

The vampire fight is on. Ji Sang recognizes vamp J from the attackers that killed his mom. J grabs Ri Ta as a hostage. Ji Sang tells him to leave her alone and that next time he will die. J tosses Ri Ta who hits the wall and is knocked out. Ji Sang runs to her side as J disappears out the window.

Blood 블러드 episode 12

As Dr. Yoo enters her apartment elevator she brushes past someone getting off – it is none other than our sinister vampire hit man, J. She feels a chill and draws her jacket around her. Opera music plays in her apartment and Dracula has fallen from the shelf. When she flips on the light, a sleepy Dr. Choi stands before her and scares her to death. Even though something seems off,  she is relieved.

After reading his journal, Hyun Woo believes Dr. Jung Han Su discovered VBT-01. At the same time, Director Wook reviews a copy of the journal in his office, having received it from security who intercepted it online. Ji Sang goes over the story in his mind of how the Director told him he contracted the virus in Kochenia 40 years ago. What was he really up to? With the information that Hyun Woo read in the journal, it seems as if he was part of the team who took cultures at the gravesite from the vampire remains. The stories don’t add up.

After learning that his terminally ill patient was transferred to Ward 21A, Dr. Park confronts the Director-vampire to vampire-and demands to know everything about what he is up to at the hospital. Dr. Park asks if it is related to their virus. When the Director coolly answers yes, Dr. Park goes berserk and asks how can he do that to the patients? The Director assures him that he can explain. In his dark, oppressive apartment (what is it with vampires and chandeliers?) he explains that he is trying to create antigens and antibodies for the good of all. Dr. Park brushes his calculated explanation aside and says he is reckless with the patients. Already, two patients have died, others are very sick, and many have serious symptoms of infection. The Director says the symptoms are temporary and will disappear in a week. Testing is almost complete and the results will be astounding: sicknesses can be cured and people can have a life expectancy beyond 150 years.  Dr. Park responds sharply that what he is doing in Ward 21A is completely insane. It is unconscionable that he is using people with no family, the elderly, homeless, and orphans. The Director’s delusional rational is that he is providing hope and getting outcomes in the process. Dr. Park calls it arrogance. We get a glimpse of the Director’s philosophy when he replies that it is his conviction born out of misery.

Blood 블러드 episode 10

Ji Sang sits at his computer and studies the files that Hyun Woo pulled up from the hospital database. He is stunned at the findings. There is a picture of Dr. Jung Han Su, renowned infectious disease doctor, with his parents from years ago. But, that’s nothing compared to what’s in store as he scrolls down: a picture of Dr. Lee Jae Wook, Dr. Jung Han Su, and his parents.

 

Assistant Director Choi paces the floor. Where is the article she secretly arranged for with the editor? Furthermore, the editor is not answering her phone calls. Uncle Chairman bursts into her office and accuses her of planning to release an article behind his back. He asks if she hates the   Director that much. She says she did it for Taemin. He throws down the intercepted article in a rage, and tells her she is putting everything at risk. She has to do something, she says, to make him wake up from his misjudgment about the Director and how he is taking over everything at the hospital. Furthermore, he has fallen for the Director’s flattery. Uncle Chairman is irate and tells her that her position is too much for her, that she is lacking for the position of Assistant Director. Assistant Director Choi snaps back that she has done everything he’s asked so far. He lowers his voice and asks if she is going to throw that in his face. If she does something like this again, he threatens, it won’t be her position she leaves, but Taemin entirely. It is his last warning. What was the vague reference to “doing everything you’ve asked so far,” and “throwing that in my face?” It seems like something is a specific reference and makes me nervous. Could it be a dirty deed in the past?

Blood 블러드 episode 9

Dr. Park is truck slammed and goes down hard. He begins to transform due to the trauma right before Dr. Yoo’s eyes. The truck driver rushes out, sure that he hit someone, but Dr. Park tells him to just go. He walks patient Gong back into the  hospital. Dr. Yoo catches up with them and asks about his injures. He says she knows he will be fine, so why ask? Cahoots Security block the entrance and insist on taking the patient from here. There is a heated exchange: Dr. Park tells them he will handle his patient, Dr. Yoo asks why the security didn’t prevent this in the first place, and the security guards hold their ground.

Blood 블러드 episode 8

Patient Gong Ja Bok is in bad shape and placed in quarantine at the Director’s orders based on the fake blood test results from the New Drug Research Team. The Director takes the patient’s care out of the hands of Dr. Park and assigns the ID team and the Drug Research Team to handle the unidentified virus. Dr. Park, Dr. Yoo, Dr. Jung, and Dr. Choi meet in the hematology lab to discuss the suspicious results for patient Gong. They disagree that it is a virus and are certain the blood test results are fake. Dr. Jung suspects that an unrecorded medication was given to him and he had a reaction. He learns that Dr. Park is leaving and asks him to consider staying. He believes they are on the verge of uncovering something big. The patient is stabilized by Leader Suh to cover what she’s been up to. Director Wook is unhappy with the attention her carelessness has caused and leans in and whispers, “Please allow me to keep my promise I made to you. If you make one more mistake…the promise is revoked.” A vague threat is still a threat. Not that I’m looking out for the likes of Leader Suh.

Blood 블러드 episode 7

Lee Jae Wook removes his hood to reveal his master vampire identity to Ji Sang. Yes, he tells Ji Sang, I am infected. Ji Sang is stunned and asks how long he has known about him. Dr. Wook lies and says that it was when he saw him at the welcoming ceremony at the hospital. Surrounded by a gruesome bloodbath and dead bodies, Dr. Wook tells Ji Sang to step out while he disposes of the infected bodies. (He burns them like Ji Sang did with his mother’s body according to her instructions.)

Dr. Yoo expresses concern when Dr. Park’s face is cut by the patient wielding a scalpel. She stares as he puts his hand over his cheek, realizing it is already beginning to heal. Did she see anything? Inside his office he places a bandage over the area where he was cut.

Director Wook reprimands New Drug Team Leader Suh for not screening the alcoholic patient. Since alcoholics have an adverse reaction and were supposed to be excluded, he is angry that he has to deal with the situation. Leader Suh apologizes and says that information was not in his record. Director Wook wants her to get rid of the patient, but she reminds him that if he goes to another hospital they will detect what was injected into him. Director Wook arranges with security to force-ably discharge the patient. Let’s talk about the security for a minute. With high surveillance in Ward 21A and all the coming in and going out that Leader Suh and Director Wook are up to after midnight, I am curious when the CCTV footage will be asked for by the others. The hefty lead security guard is definitely in cahoots with Director Wook and can certainly cover or delete footage, so I am counting on there not being a big hole in the story over the unrestricted access and the big deal that was made over the high security measures.

Blood 블러드 episode 5

When Dr. Park and Director Wook enter the surgery room at the same time, it is a shock to Director Wook who was sure that Dr. Park would choose to face off with the vampires in order to discover who killed his mother over performing the surgery. However, when the police arrived to break up the scuffle, the vampires escaped, and Ji Sang knocked out the police and managed to get back to perform the liver transplant. With the timing so close and the surgical team on edge, Dr. Yoo demands an explanation after the surgery.  Director Wook steps out and watches from the observation gallery. Although Dr. Park completes the surgery, there are moments when contact with blood affect him and he gets a bit woozy. Dr. Yoo notices his slight wavering.

Blood 블러드 episode 4

Dr. Wook is out to rattle Ji Sang’s cage and good. After attacking Ji Sang in the vacant hospital ward the two vampires flee. Ji Sang staggers outside and collapses. Dr. Yoo sees him and runs over to check his vitals. He is very cold. She gets him to the ER where he is hooked up to monitors that give alarming readings. Just as Dr. Yoo is about to draw blood he wakes up startled, brushes her aside, and leaves. She asks what happened and he plays it down. “You’re unwell, aren’t you?” she replies.

Blood 블러드 episode 3

Dr. Park has no choice but to rush out mid-operation with the effects of full-blown vampirization upon him. He frantically opens the safe in his lab and grabs the pill box.  Recalling that Hyun Woo gave him the new improved pills that morning, he fumbles for the old pills in his jacket and takes one. He is able to return pronto to the operating room and apologizes with the excuse that it was a stomach ache. Director Wook and Dr. Ri Ta Yoo observe him intently, even suspiciously. Dr. Park fights the flashback of the deer from his youth, but the old pill kicks in and he completes the surgery in record time. Afterwards he is shaken, and calls Hyun Woo who assures him the new pills were spot on and something is amiss.

Dr. Yoo and Dr. Park have another head-butting session in the hallway. She informs him she has ordered a physical and psychological assessment of him and believes the episode in surgery was the result of a panic disorder. He is unfazed and, true to character,  tosses a few insults her way.

Blood 블러드 episode 2

After a choppy first episode with involved backstories, episode 2 takes place in the present (2015) at Taemin Cancer Center in South Korea. Dr. Park’s friend (Jung Hae In) has located information and identified the gravesite as Kochenia Drota Plains Gravesite where infected bodies have been secretly buried for 150 years. The gravesite was discovered in 1976, three years before Ji Sang was born. The date coincides with his family’s infection. Ji Sang’s friend thinks that someone has taken samples and there may be clues to creating a cure for the virus in all this.

Boss Man looks dapper in a suit. He comments to someone on the phone that the plan worked a lot faster than he thought it would. The use of these brief scenes is the PD’s technique to associate Boss Man’s overarching role in staging events over time and locations. We gather that Boss Man is luring Park Ji Sang for his yet unknown purposes and has kept track of him since he was born. After all, time is on a vampire’s side.

A truck speeds across a wide, barren field. It stops at an isolated, abandoned church. A man in a white lab jacket, his face covered with a scarf, kneels at an old tombstone and wipes off the inscription: Do not seek death. Death will seek you out. He begins to dig. The grave reveals many bones and skulls with very long eye teeth. Fangs.
